CITES (The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments that aims to protect endangered species and ensure international trade does not threaten their survival. In order to export Hoodia, a company must first obtain a CITES certificate valid for 6 months. Every shipment from South Africa MUST be accompanied by a valid certificate before it is legally allowed to be transported. Because of these restrictions, many companies are not able to lawfully obtain the Hoodia gordonii plant — these companies often create counterfeit CITES certificates to show consumers.
