Wild-crafted Hoodia is the preferred form of Hoodia due to its superior potency

Wild-crafted plants include all uncultivated plants harvested from their natural habitat for food, medicinal or other purposes. When wildcrafting is done sustainably and with proper respect, only the branches or flowers from plants are taken and the living plants are left. If it is necessary to take a whole plant, seeds of the plant are placed in the empty hole from which the plant was taken. Care is taken to only remove a few plants, flowers or branches in order to ensure plenty wild-crafted plants remain to continue the supply.

These ethical considerations have led to the enactment of International Laws (CITES) to protect wild crafted plants, including Hoodia gordonii, that are seen as endangered species.

CITES

CITES (The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments that aims to protect endangered species and ensure international trade does not threaten their survival. Because the Hoodia gordonii succulent is scarce, CITES certificates must be issued in order to protect it from extinction.

In order to export Hoodia, a company must first obtain a CITES certificate valid for 6 months. Every shipment from South Africa MUST be accompanied by a valid certificate before it is legally allowed to be transported. Because of these restrictions, many companies are not able to lawfully obtain the Hoodia gordonii plant — these companies often create counterfeit CITES certificates to show consumers. Hoodia products sold by these companies contain no Hoodia at all and are not only ineffective at appetite suppression, they are dangerous and harmful to the body.
